That wasn't specific for your case. But if you can do it, everyone can - and not everyone has good intentions by doing this.

I set up a custom modpack, rented a server, and loaded the modpack on the server so that a friend and I could play. Minecraft has probably sold more copies than the bible by now, but documentation for setting up a server seems to be severely lacking. I am setting this server up for a friend and I to play on. He has literally zero modded Minecraft experience, and after playing a vanilla map to completion on a Minecraft Realms server, I wanted to see if he'd like a modded experience.

I knew that I wanted a 1. I downloaded the Curse. I was familiar with Curse as a good place to pick up mods. After registering, and setting up the app, I setup a custom pack profile. This allows me to pick out mods, and have them, plus their dependencies downloaded automatically. Here's my mod list, for the curious. Once I got all my mods figured out, it was time to do the config work.

Why do this stuff? Well, I wanted to keep only one set of worldgen for a given ore, for example. Another mod added an annoying GUI overlay that I wanted gone. Tinker Tweaks also needed some Multiple mods do weird things that you wouldn't expect them to do.

There was one mod that caused chickens to randomly shed feathers, a thing for which I had originally a separate mod to accomplish; so, not needed that separate mod, I deleted it. Some mods have strange wordl-gen options that you'll want to make sure don't overlap, or cancel each other out. Another reason to go thru and double-check things is to make sure things like: Dimensions, Potions, Enchantments, and Villagers, don't overlap with their IDs.

I don't think this is much of an issue, as I had no problems, but it's better to verify than to run into problems later. I did all of my testing on MultiMC, it is a fast client that kills things easily when stuff goes wrong. Next, I picked a server host. I initially decided on the 4 GB package, with the option to upgrade later, if I needed more. It turns out, there are gobs or services out there that host servers, so shop around.

I'm happy with hostehorde so far, but I've only had my stuff running for 2 days. One thing I can say, is that their 'knowledge base' is god-awful. Luckily, a sizable number of these hosting sites all run the same software; MultiCraft. I pieced together what to do from various hosting sites that all used Multicraft.

Basically, you download an FTP client first. FTP is a way to transfer larger files to a server. I picked FileZilla.

Follow your host's directions for logging in, or check out these videos that hosthorde provided. You'll need to install the Forge Server installer for the version you are running. It's pretty simple, just make sure you follow directions. Run your server once, to create the folders that Forge provides.

Shut it down afterwards. Next you have to prep your mods. Take out ALL of the clientside mods. What is a Clientside mod, you ask? There are some strange cats out there though. Usually if it is Client-side, it will say so in the description on Curse.

Run it again to create all the Config files. Next, take all of your Configs that you've edited, and FTP them to your Server's Config folder, deleting the old ones. If you are having troubles, it could be a few things. If your server host is a dick, they might not have set the server's EULA to true. Apparently, servers automatically create and run a world without any choices by default. That's what happened with me at least. There should be an option on your server's control panel to load a specific world.
