A multitude of universes await players and you will find Traveller is capable of handling almost any kind of science fiction setting, from highly intricate cyberpunk worlds to campaigns spanning entire galaxies where mighty empires clash and suns explode. These Travellers are the central protagonists of the game and scenarios revolve around their adventures and actions. If you have a favourite science fiction film or TV show, Traveller will be able to replicate it for you, bringing your best-loved futuristic moments to your tabletop.
Throughout this rulebook, the terms player and Traveller are synonymous. The term character is used to describe those in the game controlled by the referee rather than the players — what are often called non-player characters. However, rules that apply to Travellers are usually applicable to characters and vice versa.
The Third Imperium The Referee While Traveller is intended to be used for any science fiction setting its players devise, the longest running commercially available universe indeed, one of the oldest roleplaying game settings of all is the Third Imperium. Humanity has gone to the stars and found them crowded with other forms of life and other sentient races, and science and technology have advanced vastly over the present day — but the essential nature of humanity is unchanged.
Life continues as it does today, only spread out over the sea of stars. A mighty Imperium unites thousands of star systems under a single rule, but it is beset by enemies both internal and external. The Imperium commands the space between the stars, ensuring that civilisation endures and trade continues. Megacorporations and feudal lords conduct the bulk of this trade, but there will always be a place for the free trader — hardy travellers and adventurers on the fringes of Charted Space, dealing in strange goods and smuggled cargoes, doing whatever they can to make a credit.
While the Traveller rules can be used to model almost any science fiction novel, movie or setting, the traditional setting for games is the Third Imperium of Mankind, the third great empire to stretch across the stars. In the Third Imperium setting, the players take on the roles of tramp merchants and mercenaries, wandering the galaxy in search of profit and adventure. Players and Travellers Most of the participants in a Traveller game will be players. The referee creates the basic outline of the scenarios that the Travellers encounter and resolves the results of their actions using the rules in this book as a guideline.
Scenarios and Campaigns In a scenario, the Travellers embark on a journey or adventure overseen by the referee. This is true of Traveller as well, but it is worth making a special note about this game. In many circumstances, the referee is able to make a few rolls on a few tables and generate characters, battles, even a sizeable part of the known universe — this is great news for the busy referee who can then concentrate on the adventure.
However, while these tools are in place, the referee should never feel bound by them and has the latitude to ignore any generated results in preference to his own creations. The Travellers choose how their characters will react and overcome these obstacles. The Travellers have to get the cargo through safely. I'm looking for something crunchy and flexible in terms of options types of power plant, M and J Drive for example to replace TNE and T4 which both have their problems.
Different drives available for different tech levels, and design specs csn be changed according to tech level for drives and engines. Highly recommend both the free spreadsheet and the pricey High Guard.
I just got this and was wondering if there was a print-friendly copy like the Core Rulebook?? So the core book says there would be detailed rules on boarding actions in High Guard. There do not appear to be rules. I bought the deployment shuttle and aslan book to find it. Where are the boarding rules that core promised in High Guard or did I somehow miss them? Love the character generation in Traveller so decided to 1. I then read in a forum that I could request a pdf copy no charge direct from Matthew Sprange and a few hours later I get an email with the links to download from RPGNow.
Yes the pdf's are probably expensive but the service is second to none. Now I just need to return the favour and get this game to the table. I got the PDF of the main book and see little to no real differance but lots of clored pages and clip art around the same game, Adventures are pretty much usable with the prior editions with a little tweek considering Classic Traveller IS Still available on Drive thruRpg go for that or Mongoose Traveller 1st ed, I have payed Traveller in all its editions over 35 years since Classic and Snapshot and Classic is by far the best :.
So, my question is If you own the 1st edition, what exactly has changed in the second edition? Most of the comments below were from last summer. High Guard has now been out for more than 6 months. Have all the issues been fixed? Thanks, but it looks like it's on preorder only, so it must not actually be out yet. I'd wait to get the hardback as there is still errata in the PDF so you know the hardcopy is still screwed up. Because it isn't a crap test PDF.
It's an awesome supplement, and I cannot wait for the final hardback. Price gouging prompts black marketing and piracy. At least my marketing class textbook says so. Is chapter six missing or were they miss numbered? First, I don't know of any PDF that is actually worth that much as that price range is usually reserved for print books. Second, with it being filled with errata it should be much much cheaper. The errata isn't deliberate or indeed deliberating to the overall text of the game.
Mongoose have simply got a thread running listing errata, with an intent to continually update before the initial print run. There are loads of high quality products on this site that do not sell their PDFs for that much, not even the core rulebook PDFs are that much and this is not even a core book. That is ridiculous. In terms of what you are prepared to pay, that is really a matter for you.
You vote with your pocket, but Mongoose aren't obliged to set a lower price - and they have hit Silver already, so somebody is paying that amount. The corrections will all be updated in time with no extra cost as Mongoose always does.
I don't really get the criticism, tbh. The content itself is terrific! However that doesn't mean that this enormous price is justified. Mongoose are a business, who need to make profit. If they don't get their own overhead covered - and lets be clear the step up in graphical presentation for them would not come without a cost - they they'll not be able to keep making them.
